Virtue signaling. Businesses benefit when they give stakeholders clear a signal on their values and priorities. Companies that don’t have a clear position on key environment, social and governance issues - or are ambivalent - confuse their stakeholders. Investors can’t put a proper value on their shareholding, society doesn’t know if they’re a trusted neighbour and employees and potential employees don’t know whether they’re worth working for.
